Formed over millennia by the force of winds and ocean currents, Lençóis Maranhenses is a geological masterpiece in constant transformation. The National Park, established in 1981 to protect this unique ecosystem, covers more than 155,000 hectares of white sand dunes that shift with the seasons. The secret of its existence lies in the rainfall cycle: water accumulated between the dunes creates a rare phenomenon of thousands of seasonal lagoons, transforming what appears to be a desert into an infinite oasis of fresh, crystal-clear water.

Your AttrThe gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses, the city offers the best infrastructure for accommodation and dining. In Barreirinhas, there are several tour options to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, the Preguiças River, scenic flights, ATV (quad bike) tours, and skydiving.active Heading.
How to get there: Departing from São Luís, it is a 260 km (161 miles) journey via paved roads. Following the BR-135/MA-402 highway – the “Translitorânea” – you will reach Barreirinhas in an average of 4 hours.
ATINS
A coastal village belonging to the city of Barreirinhas, it sits on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and faces the Preguiças River. A charming beach destination with great lodging options, it offers tours to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, horseback riding, the “Revoada dos Guarás” (Scarlet Ibis flight), and kitesurfing.
Once in Barreirinhas, to reach Atins, you can choose between a “voadeira” (speedboat) or a 4×4 pick-up truck (open-air jeep style). The speedboat travels along the majestic Preguiças River, while the 4×4 follows an off-road trail, including a river crossing by ferry. The boat trip takes about 1 hour on average, while the 4×4 journey takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.
SANTO AMARO
A city located very close to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, it sits just 2km away from the lagoon region. The city offers excellent tour options to the National Park as well as along the Alegre River. Santo Amaro is 96 km (60 miles) away from Barreirinhas.
Departing from São Luís, it is a 235 km (146 miles) journey via paved roads. Following the BR-135/MA-402 highway – the “Translitorânea” – you will reach Santo Amaro in an average of 3 hours and 50 minutes.
